IMPLICATIONS OF URBAN FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION FOR SUSTAINABILITY (PANEL DISCUSSION)

INCIDENCES DU TRANSPORT URBAIN DE MARCHANDISES SUR LA DURABILITÉ (TABLE RONDE)

Chair / Président : Ted Gill, Senior Project Manager, McCormick Rankin Corporation, Mississauga, ON

Municipalities are increasingly recognizing the importance of multiple travel modes and higher priorities for active transportation, transit and higher occupancy vehicles in their transportation planning activities. However, are similar sustainability principles being applied to urban freight transportation? Are municipalities being proactive in supporting joint distribution centres and more efficient routing practices in urban areas? Are they balancing the impact on nearby residents with the economic and operational needs of businesses and suppliers? Should freight delivery vehicles be afforded more or less status relative to other vehicles and how much should municipalities limit times delivery times? There are a number of initiatives related to more sustainable freight movement between ports, terminals and urban centres but what is the freight and logistics industry doing to improve sustainability at the destination-end of the trip? These are some of the questions that this panel discussion will address.
